Stem cell therapy in Europe for US patients

Thinking about stem cell treatment abroad? Our medical team in Sofia, Bulgaria, inside the European Union, reviews your records and tells you honestly whether a regenerative program is reasonable for you, what it can and cannot do, and what it costs.

Before you compare clinics

No stem cell therapy is FDA-approved for knee arthritis, back pain, MS, autism or diabetes. A clinic that promises a cure is not being honest with you.

  • Remote review of your records first
  • Written plan with risks, timeline and costs
  • Follow-up after you return home
Europe, Mexico or Panama?

How to choose a stem cell clinic abroad

Many US patients compare clinics in Mexico, Panama and Europe. Price and distance matter, but these six questions matter more, wherever you go.

Regulation

Which authority oversees cell products, and under which legal framework is your program offered? In the EU, cell products are regulated as ATMPs.

Laboratory

Where are the cells produced and tested, and can the clinic name the laboratory and its certifications? Ours is a specialized partner laboratory in Graz, Austria.

Evidence

Which published studies support this treatment for your condition, and what results are realistic? You should get this in writing.

Medical review

Does a physician review your records before quoting a price, and will they tell you if treatment is not a good idea?

Follow-up

What happens after you fly home? Ask how follow-up is organized and whether your US doctor receives a report.

Red flags

Guaranteed cures, one treatment for every disease, pressure to pay quickly, or no information about the lab or doctors.

Why Europe

What treatment in the EU means for you

EU regulation. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union. Cell products that are processed in a laboratory are regulated as Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) under EU law, and can only be used within approved frameworks.

Laboratory in Austria. Cells for our programs are prepared and tested by a specialized partner laboratory in Graz, Austria.

Honest assessment first. Every program starts with a medical review of your records, not a sales offer. If another option is better for you, we tell you.

English-speaking team. Your doctors and coordinators speak English, and your US physician can receive a written report.

What the evidence says

Mesenchymal stem cells mainly work by reducing inflammation and supporting the body's own repair. Results depend on the diagnosis, its stage and your overall health. Some conditions have randomized trials; many are still early research. We explain which applies to you.

FAQ

Questions US patients ask us

Is stem cell therapy FDA approved?

Only for a few specific uses. The FDA has approved cord blood-derived blood stem cell products for certain blood disorders, and in December 2024 it approved the first mesenchymal stromal cell therapy (Ryoncil) for children with steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease. No stem cell therapy is FDA-approved for knee osteoarthritis, back pain, autism, MS, diabetes or other common conditions. Any clinic that implies otherwise is not being honest with you.

Can US patients receive stem cell treatment in Europe?

Yes. Many US patients travel abroad for medical care. In the European Union, cell-based products are regulated as Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and can only be used within approved frameworks, such as clinical trials or individual programs under medical responsibility. We explain in writing which framework applies to your program before you decide.

Will my US health insurance cover it?

In most cases, no. Most stem cell applications are not part of standard, approved care, so US insurers usually do not cover them. Please check with your insurer before making any commitment. We give you a written, itemized quote after your medical review.

How much does stem cell therapy in Europe cost?

The cost depends on the type and number of cells, the number of sessions, how the cells are given, pre-treatment tests and your stay. We do not quote a fixed price online. After reviewing your records, you receive a written, itemized offer in euros.

How long do I need to stay in Sofia?

Most programs need a short stay of a few days, including pre-treatment checks on arrival. The exact length depends on your condition and the program, and is set out in your written plan.

Can my doctor in the US stay involved?

Yes, and we recommend it. With your consent, we share a written summary of the treatment with your US physician, and follow-up check-ups are done online after you return home.
